The eighth-grader was walking in the crosswalk at Streeter Avenue and Sierra Street about 7 a.m. when a 44-year-old driver allegedly ran a red light and hit him, the Riverside Police Department said.
The boy, who was walking to school, was taken to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
The driver, a Riverside resident whose identity was not immediately available, was taken into custody on suspicion of driving while under the influence of prescription drugs.
Witnesses are asked to contact Det. Rick Prince at (951) 826-8722.
