Powerboat crashes into UC Irvine crew team; student hospitalized
A UC Irvine student was taken to a hospital Friday morning after a powerboat crashed into her crew team’s boat in Newport Beach, splitting the vessel in half and tossing several team members into the water, authorities said.
One woman was taken to the hospital with what appeared to be a broken foot. Another woman reported a foot injury but declined to be taken to a hospital, said Orange County sheriff’s Sgt. Steve Marble.
The Sheriff’s Department Harbor Patrol responded to Newport Dunes Waterfront Resort at 7:42 a.m. after the crash was reported during the crew team’s practice, Marble said.
Authorities believe the four men aboard the 22-foot powerboat were headed out to fish when the collision occurred.
“As far as we can tell, it was inattention on the part of the men on the powerboat,” Marble told Times Community News.
