Large pothole damages 22 vehicles on 5 Freeway connector
A large pothole damaged roughly 22 vehicles Tuesday morning on a connector between the 5 and 10 freeways in Boyle Heights, authorities said.
The pothole, which was reportedly about 3 feet by 6 feet, prompted the California Highway Patrol to close the connector from the southbound I-5 to the eastbound I-10 that runs through the Boyle Heights area after drivers of nearly two dozen vehicles reported flat tires or damage to their rims.
CHP officials said the agency issued a SigAlert for four hours starting at around 7:30 a.m.
California Department of Transportation says that crews are expected to be on the scene until 1 p.m. for repairs to the roadway.
Officials believe the pothole resulted from a Monday incident in which a big rig towing a cement mixer overturned on the same road.
Officers on Tuesday were diverting some of the traffic at Mission Road. Drivers are encouraged to find alternate routes or to stay out of the area to avoid heavy traffic.
