Two people are killed in police shooting in Santa Ana; 2 other suspects in custody

Two people were killed Thursday in an officer-involved shooting in Santa Ana, one day after police in the Orange County city shot and wounded a 30-year-old parolee, authorities said.

Officers responded about 6 p.m. after the report of a burglary in the 1100 block of East 4th Street. The officers made contact with four suspects and a confrontation ensued, Santa Ana Police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna said.

At some point, police opened fire. Bertagna, the department spokesman, did not know the specific circumstances that led to the shooting.

Two people were pronounced dead at the scene, Bertagna said. Two other people were taken into custody for questioning.

Their identities were not released. No officers were injured.

At least one gun was recovered at the scene, Bertagna said.

The shooting comes one day after Santa Ana police shot and wounded a 30-year-old man who was previously convicted of assaulting a police officer.

Officers responded on Wednesday about 3:30 p.m. to the 2700 block of West McFadden Avenue where they tried to contact Carlos Michael Rodriguez, a documented gang member and parolee, police said.

Rodriguez allegedly opened fire at a detective, who suffered a graze wound to the head. The officer returned gunfire and shot Rodriguez in the upper and lower torso, police said.

Rodriguez was hospitalized and is now in stable condition. He was booked on several charges including attempted murder on a police officer, possession of a gun within a school zone and possession of a concealed gun, with an additional gang enhancement.

Two guns were recovered at the scene, police said. The officer who was struck by gunfire was treated and released from a hospital, police said.
