Suspects in stolen car chased across L.A. -- to LAPD headquarters
Three people led police on a wild pursuit Thursday night that started in West Los Angeles and ended downtown -- at the doorstep of Los Angeles Police Department headquarters.
Officers spotted a driver in a green Honda Civic driving erratically in West L.A. When they ran the license plate, they discovered the car was stolen and pursued it, said LAPD Officer Jane Kim.
The car took off on city streets, speeding along Pico Boulevard and briefly entering the 110 Freeway before exiting in downtown Los Angeles, Kim said. LAPD officers and a helicopter unit gave chase.
Once downtown, the driver turned a corner and was about to pass police headquarters on First Street when officers deployed the PIT maneuver and stopped the car.
News footage showed three people exit the vehicle and surrender to police as several squad cars surrounded them.
“It’s almost comical that it happened to end right in front of our office,” Kim said. “I can see it from our window.”
Earlier Thursday evening, a driver in a white sedan led Burbank police on a high-speed chase on the 134 Freeway and through the streets of Hollywood, at times reaching 100 mph and twice trying to escape on foot.
That driver was also apprehended.
