Mother of missing O.C. hiker asks friends to join search
The mother of one of the hikers missing in Trabuco Canyon is asking for volunteers to help search for her missing daughter and daughter’s friend.
Dawn Jack — whose daughter Kyndall Jack, 18, and her friend Nicholas Cendoya, 19, both of Costa Mesa, have been missing since Sunday — sent out a message to friends via text asking for their help, according to Newport-Mesa Unified School District board trustee Katrina Foley. Foley’s son is friends with Kyndall’s sister.
Cendoya and Kyndall notified authorities about 8:25 p.m. Sunday that they were lost while hiking in Trabuco Canyon, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department. Their cellphone battery apparently ran out after making that initial call.
The two hikers thought they were about a mile from their vehicle, authorities said. Deputies searched for the man and woman on foot but were unable to find them.
As of Monday, authorities were using bloodhounds and air support to search for them, according to the Sheriff’s Department.
The Jack family is from the Mesa del Mar neighborhood, Foley said in a message to friends via text. Dawn Jack is also a classified employee at Corona del Mar High School, according to the message.
Cendoya played football and Jack played volleyball when they attended Costa Mesa High School.
The Sheriff’s Department asked that anyone with information about the whereabouts of the two missing hikers call (714) 647-7000.
