Man killed by skateboard at O.C. Starbucks was convicted of sex crime in 2012

A man who was fatally struck by a skateboard at an Orange County Starbucks has been identified as a 50-year-old who was previously convicted of breaking into a home and exposing himself to a woman and her grandchildren.

The Orange County coroner’s office identified the man killed Nov. 24 at a Starbucks as Ozro Robert Lee, a resident of Santa Ana.

Detectives believe that Lee walked into the coffee shop in the 3300 block of South Bristol Street in Santa Ana and approached a man in his 20s.

At some point, the two got into a verbal and physical fight, with the younger man using a skateboard, said Santa Ana police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna.

Lee went into cardiac arrest after being struck and was pronounced dead at a hospital, Bertagna said.

In 2012, a jury convicted Lee of burglary, indecent exposure and child annoyance and he was sentenced to four years in state prison, according to the O.C. district attorney’s office.

Prosecutors said that in 2011, Lee broke into a Garden Grove home where a 59-year-old woman and her two granddaughters, ages 6 and 8, were living.

After the children saw him and screamed, Lee lowered his pants and began to masturbate himself, prosecutors said. He left the home and was arrested by O.C. sheriff’s deputies nearby, prosecutors said.

As part of his sentencing, Lee was forced to register as a sex offender.

The man who struck Lee with the skateboard remained at the scene and voluntarily answered investigators’ questions, Bertagna said. He has not been arrested or charged, and the incident remains under investigation.
