Marina del Rey man bitten by shark in Maui
A 58-year-old Marina del Rey man was recovering Wednesday after he was bitten by a shark at a beach in Maui.
Officials said the shark was believed to be about 10 feet long and bit the man on his right thigh while he was in the water Tuesday morning at Kaanapali Beach, which is in the city of Lahaina on the island’s west shore.
The victim told authorities the shark’s head was “the size of a basketball,” Maui County officials said in a statement.
Officials shut down the popular beach for a mile in both directions. It was reopened Wednesday afternoon.
County lifeguards and state officials patrolled the beach in all-terrain vehicles and monitored the water with binoculars from a nearby rooftop, but they did not spot any sharks.
The man remained in a hospital on Wednesday. His name was not released.
