During a brief, chaotic pursuit of a group of people suspected of carrying out an armed robbery, police in Long Beach on Sunday shot and wounded a man who remains in critical condition.

Police arrived at Lemon Avenue and Pacific Coast Highway about 3:20 p.m. to investigate an armed robbery that occurred earlier in the day, according to a statement by the Long Beach Police Department.

When officers came toward a group of suspects in a parking lot, some fled in a car and others ran away, but police arrested one person, authorities said. Officers also found a firearm.

The car crashed across the street into a parked vehicle, police said, and as one of the suspects exited the car, officers opened fire but did not hit him.

Another man was shot by police as he fled on foot, police said. He was later taken to the hospital and was listed in critical condition. His name and age were not released.

A total of six people — five men and one male under the age of 18 — were arrested in connection with the armed robbery. Their identities were not released.

Police said no suspects involved with the robbery remain at large.

Additional details about the armed robbery that preceded the shooting were also not released.

The shooting, which occurred about two blocks from Long Beach Polytechnic High School, led to the closure of Pacific Coast Highway between Orange Avenue and Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue.
