Detectives seek leads in death of 14-month-old Hawthorne boy
Detectives on Monday night were seeking the public’s help in gathering information regarding the death of a 14-month-old Hawthorne boy.
The boy was not breathing when he arrived at Centinela Hospital in Inglewood, where he was pronounced dead Sunday night. An autopsy was pending.
Detectives with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department arrested the boy’s mother, Sandra Cartegena, 42, on suspicion of child endangerment, and her boyfriend, Julio Mejia, 44, on suspicion of murder. They were being held at the Hawthorne city jail.
The couple’s 9-year-old and 14 year-old sons were taken into protective custody by the county Department of Children and Family Services, authorities said.
Anyone with information is asked to call authorities at (323) 627-8137.
