50-acre Glendale fire disrupts wedding party, no homes threatened

A brush fire that broke out Sunday in Glendale burned through 50 acres by evening, disrupting wedding festivities at Brand Park but it did not threaten any homes or structures, fire officials said.

The blaze that started around 12:30 p.m. in the hills above the park was expected to be contained by Monday, said Greg Fish, deputy chief of the Glendale Fire Department. Firefighters were bracing for the possibility of additional wind gusts overnight, he said, and a bulldozer was on its way to dig a fire line.

A previous version of this post said five hikers were airlifted out of the fire area. Three were airlifted out and two other hikers walked out on their own, authorities said.

“It’s active, but staying away from structures,” Fish said. “This is going to be a lot of work for our crews. We’re dealing with steep, rocky terrain.”

Earlier in the day, three hikers were airlifted from the canyon, none of them injured. Two other hikers walked out of the fire area on their own. One firefighter was hit by a rolling rock, but he was not seriously injured and returned to work after being treated, Fish said.

The relatively high humidity -- around 40% -- was helping fire crews. More than 100 firefighters from Glendale and Los Angeles, as well as four helicopters, were battling the blaze.

Fire officials said it was not immediately clear how the fire broke out. Wedding festivities that were taking place at the park Sunday were moved after the fire started, officials said.
