Coliseum Olympic torch to be lighted to honor JFK anniversary
Officials from USC and Los Angeles will light the Olympic torch at the Coliseum for 24 hours beginning at 12:01 a.m. Friday to honor former President John F. Kennedy on the 50th anniversary of his death.
Kennedy gave the Democratic National Convention nomination speech in the Coliseum in July of 1960.
“Earlier in the week, I got a call from Congresswoman Janice Hahn from our nation’s capitol suggesting that the torch be lit. I quickly called USC President C. L. Max Nikias,” Councilman Tom LaBonge said in a statement. “I am now joined with Councilmember Curren Price and the entire City Council in thanking USC for this tribute. “
Kennedy was killed in Dallas 50 years ago. Across the country, tributes have been held to commemorate the anniversary of the assassination.
