CHP recommends charges for Dennis Rodman in alleged hit-and-run in Santa Ana
The California Highway Patrol says former pro basketball star Dennis Rodman should face charges in connection with a hit-and-run freeway crash on Interstate 5 in Santa Ana last month.
The agency has recommended the Orange County District Attorney’s Office charge Rodman with felony hit-and-run and driving the wrong way on a freeway, according to Highway Patrol Officer Florentino Olivera.
Rodman has not been cited or arrested, Olivera said.
The potential charges stem from an incident that occurred around 12:30 a.m. July 20 on Interstate 5 in Santa Ana, according to the highway patrol.
Rodman was driving a Range Rover the wrong way in a southbound carpool lane, Olivera said. The driver of a black BMW traveling south was forced to swerve to avoid a head-on collision and struck the freeway’s concrete center divider.
The BMW driver told authorities that Rodman left the scene after a short conversation and did not exchange information. Olivera said the driver and passenger in the BMW complained of pain but did not seek medical treatment.
“It could have been a lot worse,” Olivera said.
Susan Kang-Schroeder, chief of staff at the Orange County District Attorney’s Office, said the matter is being reviewed and no charges have been filed.
Known for his rebounding and defense skills on the court, Rodman played 14 seasons in the NBA for the Pistons, Bulls, Spurs, Lakers and Mavericks. He was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2011.
Rodman’s marketing agent did not return a call seeking comment.
