The dress was picked out. The venue was booked. And the wedding day was fast approaching.

But just days before the big day, the groom-to-be called the whole thing off.

This left the would-be bride without a wedding, and her family with many nonrefundable bills, including a gourmet dinner for 120 guests at Sacramento’s Citizen Hotel.

So the family decided to not let the feast go to waste, inviting homeless families to the ballroom for the dinner, according to a report by KCRA in Sacramento.

“When I found out on Monday that the wedding would not be taking place, it just seemed like, of course, this would be something that we would do to give back,” said Kari Duane, the bride’s mother.

Dozens of people in need filled the hall to eat. The dinner, from the same kitchen as the hotel’s four-star restaurant, included salad, cauliflower, gnocchi, salmon and even tri-tip.

Erika Craycraft, who came with her husband and five children, said she was thankful for the Duane family’s generosity.

“To lose out on something so important to yourself and then give it to someone else is really giving, really kind,” Craycraft told KCRA.
