Baby accidentally run over and killed after slipping out of mother’s hands
A 3-month-old baby girl was killed Sunday when she slipped out of her mother’s grip and was run over by a rolling vehicle, authorities said.
The mother and her family were visiting a fast-food restaurant for lunch about 11:46 a.m. in the 11200 block of 4th Street in Rancho Cucamonga. They were using a borrowed vehicle, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.
She was securing the vehicle and getting her daughter and 3-year-old son out while her husband placed orders inside the restaurant.
The 31-year-old mother thought the vehicle was turned off, but then she noticed it started rolling back. The mother was unfamiliar with the vehicle, deputies said. As she tried to brake, she lost hold of her daughter.
The girl fell and was struck by the vehicle as it rolled back, sheriff’s official said.
The mother eventually stopped the vehicle and tended to her daughter. The baby was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Sheriff’s officials said the mother was “extremely upset” but assisted deputies with their investigation.
