Police use pepper balls to subdue naked man at San Diego’s Qualcomm Stadium
A naked man screamed and hurled things off the roof of a pizza restaurant at Qualcomm Stadium for two hours Saturday before police subdued him by shooting him with pepper ball rounds.
Nothing was going on at the stadium at the time, San Diego police said, but scores of people had been in the parking lot from 8 a.m. until noon for an annual trade-in of gas-powered lawn mowers for a low-cost battery style.
Stadium security called police about 12:45 p.m. to report that the man had somehow clambered atop Oggi’s Pizza in a food vending area. He was screaming, throwing things and damaging the air-conditioning unit, police said.
A police helicopter was used to keep an eye on him from above while officers used a scissors-lift to reach the roof. They were concerned about using a ladder because the man might have pushed it away while an officer was on it, police Sgt. Ray Battick said.
