Warning: Aggressive shark spotted off San Onofre
Reporting from San Diego — A 48-hour warning has been issued after a surfer had a run-in with an aggressive shark off the coast at San Onofre State Beach on Wednesday, roughly the same area where a woman was attacked less than two weeks ago.
“The shark activity was sighted by a surfer, who had a very close encounter with a shark,” Camp Pendleton spokeswoman Lt. Abigail Peterson said. “That prompted the warning.”
The surfer told lifeguards about the incident, which happened in the waters off the northern beach of the Marine base, a popular surfing site known as Church. It’s also popular among sharks as a location to rear their young.
Wednesday’s warning was posted on the official Facebook page of Camp Pendleton, and also tweeted out by the base.
The warning advises beachgoers to be careful and heed warnings from local authorities, including lifeguards.
On April 29, a shark believed to be a great white bit Leeanne Ericson’s right buttock and upper leg down to the bone while she was swimming in the area.
In a statement three days ago, her mother posted a statement that said Ericson, 35, finally was able to breathe on her own.
