Ashley Wagner isn’t impressed with her Olympics score

Ashley Wagner was ecstatic over her performance in the women’s team event short program at the Sochi Olympics on Saturday.

But then her score was revealed.

The 63.10 points Wagner received were lower than she expected, and the two-time U.S. champion couldn’t help but show her true feelings (see photo above) with a facial expression that is sure to draw comparisons to U.S. gymnast McKayla Maroney’s infamous “not impressed” look from the London Games in 2012.

Wagner said she simply was surprised about her scores because she thought she had nailed her routine.

“I know roughly when I skate a good program where the score should end up,” said Wagner, who was penalized by the judges for an under-rotated triple-triple combination. “So, yeah, to score that low was very disappointing for me.”

Nonetheless, she finished fourth, good enough to help the U.S. make the cut for the team finals.

The solid performance also provided some personal redemption for Wagner, who fell twice in her long program at the U.S. championships last month. She finished fourth there but was still one of the three women chosen for the national team based on her overall performance in the past year — a decision criticized by some on social media.

“The entire performance was redemption for me,” she said after Saturday’s event. “I needed to prove to myself mostly that one bad competition doesn’t define me and I can get beyond that.”
