Yarn Crawl L.A.: Demos, giveaways and knitting with dogs
Cindy Loeffler calls it “the Super Bowl for knitters and crocheters”: Yarn Crawl L.A., a four-day party involving 32 boutiques throughout the region.
It’s the second year for the event, and “this year is going to be bigger and better,” said Loeffler, owner of Alamitos Bay Yarn Co. in Long Beach and one of the organizers. From April 11 to 14, the Yarn Crawl calendar will include trunk shows, pattern giveaways, weaving demonstrations, make-and-take projects, the Yarnover Truck and a dog shearing.
Evi T’Bolt, who opened the shop Gather DTLA in November inside the Last Bookstore in downtown L.A., said she plans to shear her beloved Chinese crested powderpuff April 12 so its fur can be spun into yarn.
“We have invited our favorite local groomer to perform the honors and will talk about how to harvest your dog’s coat for knitting,” she said, adding that a spinning demonstration will be part of the event. Bolt also will lead a crochet project involving Arizona river rocks.
“We are going to cover rocks with yarn,” she said, “and show people that yarn can be conceptual.”
Participants can get a free passport for Yarn Crawl L.A. online or pay $5 for a passport and tote bag. Each store will give away a gift basket worth more than $250, organizers said. Those who get their passport stamped at every store will be eligible to win a gift certificate good for use at as many as three of the stores. If that sounds like too much — yarn crawling from Santa Monica to Claremont, from Santa Clarita to Long Beach — just consider that 20 people hit every store last year, Loeffler said.
