Los Angeles Conservancy puts historic houses on the map
The Los Angeles Conservancy’s revamped website has some nice additions for design gawkers, including short profiles of key houses and apartments as well as an architecture map locating more than 400 historic places in Southern California.
The Housing the Masses collection of design profiles includes some nice surprises, such as details of a prefab housing experiment in Panorama City. Another collection titled Living the High Life covers John Lautner’s Silvertop, Pierre Koenig’s Stahl House and other landmarks, plus lesser-known spots.
As for that map: Modernism experts and preservation historians, architects and practitioners selected the points of interest last fall, L.A. Conservancy spokeswoman Cindy Olnick said. Their goal: Show not only the icons but also often-overlooked gems that represent different styles across L.A. County.
Some non-Modern places on the map represent the L.A. Conservancy’s advocacy efforts and award winners, Olnick said. More buildings will be added over time, she said.
