No wardrobe malfunctions here: These bikinis stay put
When Bridget Dome wanted to get back in shape after her pregnancy, she headed to the sand with another new mom, Sibylle Postley, to try some beach volleyball.
“Quickly, I was hooked,” Dome said. “Then I had to gear up.”
The friends, who had met playing indoor volleyball and knew the sport was a great way to get in shape fast, found most swimsuits lacking. Some were serviceable but not stylish. Many quickly fell apart after a few months of wear. Other two-pieces had skin-rubbing straps or bottoms that slipped.
So they decided to create a line of stay-in-place bikinis, Pepper Swimwear — a nod to the name for volleyball’s warm-up.
Now the line is in its third season and is being worn by pro international and U.S. volleyball players, such as San Diego native Kim DiCello.
The samples are stitched on Postley’s sewing machine at her Santa Monica home office, and the final bikinis are made in nearby South Gate.
The reversible, vibrantly colored suits are appropriate not just for volleyball but also for surfing, swimming, stand-up paddle boarding and other water and outdoor sports. (Read the rave customer reviews here.)
Postley and Dome, who also lives in Santa Monica, are now at work on their first custom print that features images of sun-drenched local palm trees, beaches and flowers. Next, they plan to add more coverage to their swimwear, and are considering a juniors collection as well as one for kids such as their girls, who are both about 5.
“They are best friends,” Postley said. “We’re hoping someday they’ll be their own beach volleyball team.”
