4 Instagram-worthy hikes to try while you wait for Runyon Canyon to reopen
Runyon Canyon ranks as one of the most Instagram-friendly spots in all of Los Angeles. So what’s your social media feed supposed to do while repairs have forced the closure of the Hollywood Hills hiking trail popular with celebrities and civilians alike?
You can always hit Griffith Park. Or hike to the Hollywood sign. But if you want to branch out and try something new, here are four Instagram-worthy (and dog-friendly!) hikes in and around Los Angeles.
Unfortunately, we can’t guarantee you’ll run into someone famous … but you will get a great workout:
1. Fryman Canyon
This Studio City walking area is popular with hikers, joggers, runners, dog owners and families. Go early to get a space in the parking lot and to heighten that getaway feeling. The 3-mile loop is a 3 in terms of difficulty, on a scale of 1 to 5.
2. Upper Franklin Canyon Reservoir
This hidden country-in-the-city hiking spot, set below Mulholland Drive, west of Coldwater Canyon, is just minutes from Beverly Hills or Studio City. Depending on which route you choose, you can walk up to 4.5 miles, or longer. Difficulty also depends on which route, but the longer walk is a 3 on a scale of 1 to 5.
3. Elyria Canyon Park
This quiet, off-the-map spot between the communities of Cypress Park and Mount Washington offers a nice break from big-city noise, as well as views of downtown. But the 1.3-mile round-trip hike is not easy. It’s a 4 on a scale of 1 to 5.
4. Elysian Park
Near downtown L.A., it offers a great network of trails and commanding broad city and mountain views. Our favorite walk is 2.5 miles, and is a beginner-friendly 2 on a scale of 1 to 5.
