Time to think tomato seeds and a tomato press from Italy
It’s never too early to start thinking tomatoes. And to that end, if you’re interested in Italian varieties and up to starting plants by seed, the mail order firm Seeds from Italy is about to send out its 2013 catalog.
They’ve got more than two dozen Italian tomato varieties, including Tomato Tondo Liscio, Tomato Sorento, Tomato San Marzano, Tomato Cuor di Bue (oxheart) and Tomato Lilliput ($3.15 to $3.95). Don’t you just love those names? They’re all from Franchi Seeds, Italy’s oldest family-owned seed company.
Seeds from Italy owner Dan Nagengast (who bought the business in 2011 from founder Bill McKay) also imports the much coveted Rigamonti Velox tomato press, which does a nifty job of separating tomato seeds and skin from the pulp ($46.95). Youre going to need it when all those tomatoes start coming in this summer.
