Condoms that seal wine bottles? Yes, and there’s a Kickstarter campaign

For those rare occasions when you don’t finish that amazing bottle of wine, you’ll need a way to store the leftovers. You may grab a wine stopper, but a mother-and-son team from Dallas have another idea.

The pair have created what they call a wine condom, and, of course, there’s a Kickstarter campaign to fund their invention. The device is a little piece of rubber that you stretch over the top of an open wine bottle. You roll the material over the top and down a portion of the neck of the bottle.

Bartlett and Mitchell Strahan thought of the idea after Bartlett brought home an open wine bottle about a year ago. She had attempted to seal it with Saran wrap and rubber bands.

“It was extremely ghetto, but I was intrigued,” said Mitchell in a video for the Kickstarter campaign, seen above. “We thought, what if we made this... Not Saran Wrap and rubber bands, but a wine condom. A rubber gadget gizmo sent down from the heavens to protect wine.”

The condoms are made of 100% rubber and are designed to be disposed of after one or two uses.

The seal works on regular wine, but it won’t work on any bubbly. In the video above, Strahan shakes a bottle of champagne and the pressure causes the condom to pop off.

The price for a 10-pack or a 25-pack of the condoms has yet to be decided. Since the 30-day campaign started, the two have received 134 backers and $3,888 of their $7,500 goal. Based on the amount pledged, backers can receive a Wine Condom shirt, sweatshirt, glasses and more.

“And remember, drink responsibly,” cautions Mitchell. “Use proper protection. Use wine condoms.”
