Here’s where you can find Spam fries and ramen doughnuts this weekend
Certain food mashups are made in heaven. Need we remind you of the Cronut?
And some culinary Frankensteins are made in Orange County, by a genius food website, an unnamed chef and a guy named Josh Scherer, who refers to himself as Culinary Browdown.
Clearly, this is going to be memorable.
Foodbeast.com, a Santa Ana-based food website you need to be following, got together with some culinary friends to make something called Spanimal Fries and the Ramnut. Now try saying Spanimal Fries three times fast.
The Spanimal Fries are made with deep-fried, French fry-shaped pieces of Spam covered in American cheese, Asian thousand island sauce (mayo, kimchi, green onions, ketchup and rice wine vinegar), soy-glazed caramelized onions and furikake. Think the animal-style fries at In-N-Out, but super-low carb and Asian.
If you don’t want a lot of schmutz on your Spam fries, you can order them with Sriracha ketchup and togarashi.
Foodbeast director of content Geoff Kutnick worked with a “dope unnamed chef” to make the Spaminal Fries.
And as for the Ramnut, it’s something Scherer created last year. The doughnut is made with ramen that’s soaked and boiled in horchata, deep-fried and dusted with powdered sugar.
Wondering where you can get your hands on some Spanimal Fries and Ramnuts? They will both be at the Foodbeast booth at the OC Night Market food event this weekend
The Spanimal fries will be $10 and the Spam fries $6. You’ll be able to build your own Ramnut with optional fillings of chocolate pastry cream or vanilla pastry cream and a variety of toppings including chocolate frosting, strawberry frosting, cream cheese frosting, chocolate sprinkles and rainbow sprinkles. You can order one Ramnut for $6 or two for $10.
Foodbeast founder and publisher Elie Ayrouth says if the Spaminal fries and Ramnuts do well at the market this weekend, he’ll incorporate them into future events.
The OC Night Market is happening at the Orange County Fairgrounds, 88 Fair Drive, Costa Mesa, Friday to Sunday.
