Name: Right Choice Caribbean Market, a small family-owned market on Crenshaw Blvd. in Leimert Park, just south of the Baldwin Hills Plaza — so you can hit Mexicana or Post & Beam while you’re there.

Concept: Opened since 2000, Right Choice specializes in a wide variety of Caribbean goods from Jamaica, Anguilla, Antigua, Barbados, Bermuda, Cayman Islands, Dominica, El Salvador, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Fiji Islands, Honduras, Samoa and St. Kitts.

What it stocks: The market has an impressive selection of curry powders, hot sauce and jerk sauce, along with dried and canned goods. The fresh produce selection is small, but includes Caribbean staples such as peppers, plantains, tamarind pods, coconut and a selection of yams. The limited frozen section includes meats, prepared foods (including cassava cakes and Jamaican patties) and produce (including soursop pulp, pigeon peas and okra). The store also stocks an assortment of Caribbean snacks and beverages, and has a large selection of dried herbs (medicinal and culinary).

Who shops there: Families and people who really love their jerk and curry powder.

The find: Yellow yams. Apparently the yams, a staple in Jamaican cooking, are a popular item at the store. On a recent visit, they were $7 per pound.

Parking: There’s a small parking lot on the side of the market.

Information: 4233B South Crenshaw Blvd., Los Angeles, (323) 292-8921. Monday through Friday 9 a.m.-8 p.m.; Saturday 9 a.m.-9 p.m.; Sunday 9:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.
