Doughnuts, beer and stuff-on-toast, at a new restaurant in downtown L.A.
Love doughnuts and things on toast? Then you’ll probably want to head to Mega Bodega, a small, 2-week-old storefront -- no signage -- near the corner of Olympic Boulevard and Broadway in downtown L.A.
There, the pastries are from Bread Lounge, the doughnuts (rainbow sprinkle, old fashioned and chocolate old fashioned on a recent visit) are from Daily Donut in Los Feliz, the coffee is from Four Barrel SF, and the tea is from Steep Tea Co. in Oakland.
The menu reads like an L.A. breakfast restaurant greatest hits list: housemade granola, avocado toast, churro toast (butter and cinnamon sugar on brioche), “naughty” toast (toast topped with Nutella, strawberry and banana), “don’t croque” (prosciutto and melted Gruyere on brioche) and “beese briez” (a baguette with brie, raw honey and pepper).
There are also sandwiches, including a pastrami melt, and a torta made with Soyrizo. You can order a cheese and charcuterie board appropriately named Smorgas-Board, or go for the grain bowl (called a salad bowl on the menu), with quinoa.
To drink, there’s a rotating list of beers on tap, coffee drinks, wine, kombucha and cold-pressed juices.
A bottle of Craftsman Brewing Janus Ale comes with a download code for Matt Kivel’s album Janus, which happens to be the inspiration behind the beer.
The focal point of the space is a long counter, where people can work on their computers while they sip a cordato. There’s also table seating along the opposite wall and an enclosed area out front with wooden benches and a couple of crates for tables, similar to the early set-up at Gjusta in Venice.
There are no official hours posted yet; just know you can order beer “all day.”
