Because we really need to do something to keep our landfills full, Keurig has partnered with Campbell’s to create soup in a K-Cup.

Campbell’s Fresh-Brewed Soup can be brewed in any Keurig machine that uses K-Cup pods. It’s a two-part process in which you first empty a noodle packet into a 12-ounce cup and then insert a broth K-Cup pod into the machine.

Next, brew the broth into the cup, stir and let it sit awhile before consuming. (Because Cup Noodles and Top Ramen are so complicated.)

“Life is busy. Joyous. Crazy. Wonderful. But always busy. Snacks should be ready when we are. To fuel our day without slowing us down,” the marketing masterminds at Keurig write at FreshBrewedSoup.com. “Soccer practice? Won. Meetings? Mastered.” Sounds like an exciting new option to keep you at your desk during lunchtime in case you aren’t already depressed enough at work.

The new soup K-Cups come in two varieties: Homestyle Chicken Broth & Noodle Soup Mix and Southwest Style Chicken Broth & Noodle Soup Mix. Both varieties are 70 calories or less per serving and are made without artificial colors or flavors. However, they also offer virtually no nutritional content and 750 mg of sodium per serving — nearly a third of the adult daily allowance. MSG lover? It’s in there.

“Real food that matters for life’s moments,” Campbell says. Or, if not real real food, at least salty, hot, chickeny drinks.

Some frequently asked questions on the FreshBrewedSoup website: “Will my soup taste like coffee?” Answer: Maybe! “To ensure the product delivers on flavor, we suggest you run a hot water brew cycle without a K-Cup pod before and after making a Campbell’s soup.” “Will I get grounds in my soup?” Answer: Possibly! See answer above.

Without a hint of irony, Keurig adds in its news release that if “you need instructions on how to brew this unique product, visit www.youtube.com/watch?v=N46K2CDoD0M.”

Keurig hasn’t been doing that well — so far this year, the company has lost more than half its stock value. According to CNN, the company reported disastrously bad results last month and planned to lay off 330 workers.

The company obviously hopes this new product will be Chicken Soup for the Profit Margin Soul.
