Hadley, your date shake desert oasis, has moved

If you’ve driven the 10 Freeway en route to Palm Springs or Palm Desert, chances are you’ve seen the sign for Hadley Fruit Orchards. This is where your parents would stop on the way home from trips to the desert to buy you a date shake, and maybe a bag of dried apricots for the car ride home.

The store, which had been at its first location since the 1960s, has moved to a new location, conveniently right next to the original.

The Morongo Band of Mission Indians, which bought Hadley in 1999, built a 12,500-square-foot space for the store. The original Hadley, with its fluorescent lights and rows of wooden shelves full of dried fruits and nuts, has remained vacant since the new building opened. (There’s no word on plans for the old space yet).

And yes, the original sign is still visible from the freeway — a beacon of hope after a long weekend sunbathing in Palm Springs or, worse, dancing at Coachella.

The new store will continue to serve the date shakes, dried fruit, nuts and honey that the store is known for, but with some new items as well. There’s now a selection of fresh fruit, non-GMO and gluten-free products and house-made bread.

You’ll also find wine, craft beer, vitamins, trail mix and other gift items. And there’s a section for made-to-order deli sandwiches and pizzas.
