Pies! Mole! Fishing! Mark your calendars for these upcoming food events

Now that our big food festival is over, it’s time to mark your calendars for all the fun events that are coming up. And there are plenty of them. Here are a few that stand out. Sign up, get tickets if applicable, start that juice fast, and maybe get baking.

Good Food Pie Contest — As most everyone in this town knows, every year for the past 7 years Evan Kleiman has been hosting KCRW’s Good Food Pie Contest, a massive pie bake-off for both amateur and professional bakers. This is the seventh such contest, and will include new events, such as an all-day cookbook swap and a marketplace, as well as food trucks and music. Among this year’s judges: Sherry Yard, Nicole Rucker, Roxana Jullapat, Akasha Richmond, Zak Walters and Chris Phelps of Salt’s Cure, as well as some folks from this newspaper. The deadline to enter this year is Sept. 27 at 11:55 p.m. Oct. 4, Fowler Museum, UCLA, events.kcrw.com.

La Feria de los Moles — The Olvera Street mole festival, billed as the largest Mexican food festival in the U.S., returns for its eighth year. What else is returning: Mole de Caderas a traditional Mixtec dish prepared with goat, which originated in Tehuacán, Puebla. There will also be a special presentation on the origin of the famous mole, which is one of Puebla & Oaxaca’s main dishes, a debate among judges from the Mexican states known for their mole, and tastings of the different mole styles for everyone. This year there will be pastries and dishes other than mole as well. Expect over 30,000 people and more than 13 different moles. The event is free, food is available for purchase. Go Fish LA — Want to go fishing? Want to go fishing with some Los Angeles chefs? Every year for the last few years, Lucy Lean has been organizing a boat trip out of San Pedro, inviting local chefs — who bring food — and making tickets available for the rest of us to come along. In years past, the chefs bringing their fishing rods onboard have included Michael Cimarusti (Providence), Josiah Citrin (Melisse) and Ludo Lefebvre (Trois Mec). Not your average fishing buddies; not your average boat food. Tickets are now on sale for this year’s trip, on the Monte Carlo Boat out of the 22nd St Landing in San Pedro. Tickets are $125 for an all-afternoon trip; the fish you catch are free. Sept. 27, from noon to early evening, ladlesandjellyspoons.com/fishing.
