Why Canadians are better snackers: Grilled Cheese and Maple Moose chips

When Lay’s held a flavor contest in the U.S. earlier this year, the best flavors people could come up with were Sriracha, Cheesy Garlic Bread and Chicken and Waffles. Cheesy Garlic Bread won. Not bad, but where’s the imagination people? Apparently it’s all in Canada.

Reddit user r/funny recently posted a photo with the caption: “As an American, this is my highlight to a trip to Canada.” One may expect to see a photo of a big plate of poutine, a hockey jersey or a group of smiling Mounties. Instead, he posted a photo of four bags of Lay’s potato chips. A surprise, until you read the flavors.

Lay’s is holding a flavor contest in Canada and the four finalists are anything but boring. They include Bacon and Onion Perogy, Grilled Cheese and Ketchup, Maple Moose, and Creamy Garlic Caesar Salad. Why didn’t we think of those? And what the heck is Maple Moose?

The Lay’s Canada Facebook page describes the Maple Moose flavor as “a smoky flavour with a hint of sweetness.” And the bag features a cartoon moose wrapped around a container of maple syrup. Is the smoky flavor supposed to be what a moose tastes like? Ew, but major points for thinking outside the box.

And a pierogi flavor opens up an entire new world of ethnic-food-flavored chip possibilities. Thai boat noodle, cochinita pibil and chana masala should all be in the running next year, eh?
