Best and worst Valentine’s Day stories: A dessert proposal gone very wrong
Valentine’s Day is one of the busiest times of the year for a restaurant. There are countless rings to hide, requests for “the most romantic table,” and fires to put out when couples decide to break up in the middle of the dining room. We asked restaurants around the city to share their best and worst Valentine’s Day stories.
Here’s one particularly uncomfortable anecdote from Cliff’s Edge chef Vartan Abgaryan during his days at the now-closed Red Pearl Restaurant.
“We had a proposal that was a spur of the moment, I think,” said Abgaryan. “The server asked for us to write ‘Will you marry me?’ on the dessert plate.”
The restaurant obliged and wrote the question on the dessert plate. All of the staff then watched the table to see what happened after the plate was presented to the couple. But they didn’t get the reaction they were expecting.
“The dessert went to the table and the girl immediately crossed her arms, sat back in her chair and just stared at him for a good two minutes,” said Abgaryan. “That was followed by a 45-minute conversation and the dessert was never touched!”
Ouch. If we only knew what those two were talking about. Do you have a memorable Valentine’s Day story you’d like to share? We want to hear it. Share it with us on Facebook or in the comments below.
