Turning beer coasters into works of art
A new exhibit at Hollywood’s La Luz de Jesus Gallery, curated by the people behind L.A. Beer Week, showcases more than 400 works that began life as four-inch coasters before dozens of featured artists transformed them into a kaleidoscope of paintings, drawings and assemblage pieces.
The works are on display through the end of L.A. Beer Week on Sept. 29, and the exhibit’s opening reception was packed with beer-loving art fans.
The pieces include pencil sketches, oil paintings and lavish 3-D constructions, and sales of the works seemed brisk during the opening reception.
The La Luz de Jesus Gallery, which has been showcasing low-brow art for more than 25 years, is nestled in the back corner of the Wacko gift shop on Hollywood Boulevard.
The coasters that make up the Beer is Art show cover the walls of the gallery’s main space, while an exhibit of post-apocalyptic paintings by Max Grundy occupies the gallery’s front room.
L.A. Beer Week officially begins Sept. 19, but the Beer is Art show is running all month to get you in the mood to celebrate the growing craft beer culture in Los Angeles.
