Things to do in L.A.: A giant bake sale, paella dinner and a truffle party
It’s fall, finally, which means that it’s time to start baking — or, since it’s still too hot to turn on the oven at home, to have pastry chefs do it for you. It’s also time to eat paella and shop for truffles, at least according to some folks around town right now. Here are three upcoming events that will help you out with all this.
Bakers Will Bake — For the last three years, pastry chef Roxana Jullapat has been organizing a giant professional bake sale, called Bakers Will Bake, assembling a crowd of her friends to bake pastries for a good cause. This is the third event, with more than 20 local bakeries and restaurants participating this year, including Shannon Swindle (Craft), Zoe Nathan (Huckleberry), Na Young Ma (Proof Bakery), Christine Moore (Lincoln) and Jonathan Graham (Compartes Chocolatier). This year’s proceeds benefit the Edible Schoolyard at Larchmont Charter School. Oct. 11, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Hollywood Farmers Market, Ivar Avenue and Selma Avenue, facebook.com/bakerswillbake.
Perfecto Rocher pop-up — Chef Perfecto Rocher, who left Smoke.Oil.Salt over the summer, is now back from a trip to his native Spain and cooking dinners two nights a week at Hinoki & the Bird in Century City. Beginning with a paella dinner Oct. 4, Rocher will be cooking at Hinoki every Sunday and Monday night in October. On Oct. 5, the chef will be cooking a five-course Spanish tasting menu. Call the restaurant for reservations. 10 W. Century Drive, Los Angeles,(424) 284-2155, travelinspired.com.
Truffle market launch — Wally’s Wine and Spirits in Beverly Hills is hosting a truffle fest to launch its new truffle market. Not only will there be an enormous amount of truffles, but also truffle dishes from chef David Feau, truffle products from the Cheese Box and wines from locations where the truffles are sourced. Feau’s dishes include foie gras truffle torchon and soft-scrambled truffle eggs; there will also be a $1 wine tasting. Saturday, 10 a.m.-1 p.m. 447 N Canon Dr., Beverly Hills, (310) 475-3540, wallysbeverlyhills.com.
