New Oscar Mayer alarm clock app releases smell and sound of bacon

There are few things better than waking up to the smell of bacon and the sound of it sizzling on the stovetop. With a new iPhone device, you can wake up to that sound, and smell, every morning.

Oscar Mayer says it is testing a new device called Wake Up & Smell The Bacon. It’s a small add-on you attach to your iPhone that delivers the scent of bacon. To hear the sizzle, you can download the accompanying iOS app.

The app is already available to download, free in the Apple iTunes store. It features a skillet clock and the sound of sizzling bacon. But if you want the entire bacon-alarm clock package, you have to apply online, by April 4, for a chance to win one of the limited-edition devices. Winners will receive their devices six to eight weeks after the applications close. They will not be available for sale in any stores.

The device is being promoted with a video from Oscar Mayer’s Institute for the Advancement of Bacon, led by bacon enthusiast Phil Roudenbusch. The fictional institute has been used in some of the company’s previous marketing campaigns.

In the video, seen above, it’s raining bacon in one scene, there’s a giant piece of bacon flying into the heavens in the next, and a woman wakes up in a garden of bacon roses.

“At darkest midnight, the nostrils’ north star awaits you,” says Phil Roudenbusch who intermittently appears out of thin air, to narrate the video. “When imagination blossoms, only this scent will guide you to the greatest awakening. Wake up … to the morning of your dreams.”

According to Mashable, the scent is “more jerky than bacon,” and the device recites “baconisms.”

“Experience bacon with all your senses,” the voice says. “Like the deepest root, like the stormiest ocean, it’s briny cure endures. Bacon exceeds everything you ever imagined.”

It also comes with a refill of bacon scent.
