Augustine, a new wine bar by the Bar Covell team, opens in Sherman Oaks
Looking for a bottle of 1874 Chateau Lafite? Augustine, a new wine bar on Ventura Boulevard in Sherman Oaks, has one.
The bar and restaurant, by Dustin Lancaster (Bar Covell, L&E Oyster Bar, El Condor), Matthew Kaner and Dave Gibbs, opened Wednesday. Like Bar Covell in Los Feliz, Augustine specializes in rare and vintage wines, and pours 75 varieties by the glass.
Gibbs, who has been a wine collector for more than 20 years, will be offering some wine from his personal collection, which dates to the 1800s. There will also be rare wines that he and Kaner collected from private wine cellars across the country.
Highlights include a 1934 Chateau Margaux Margaux, an 1874 Chateau Lafite, La Spinetta Vementino from Tuscany, and Tyler Pinot Noir from the Santa Barbara area. And expect the menu to change nightly.
Prices will range from $10 to $100 by the glass, and bottles will range in price from $100 to $1,000. Augustine will also serve six beers on tap, scheduled to change monthly, and a variety of rare bottles.
If you need a bite to eat with your Chateau Lafite, chef Evan Algorri (Bouley, Lupa, Marea and Union Square Cafe), has an opening menu featuring braised octopus; charcuterie and spiced nuts; and root vegetable Caesar salad.
The restaurant, which has a 35-foot, 18-seat white Carrera marble-top bar, is housed in an old radio repair shop built in the 1940s.
Augustine will be open daily from 5 p.m., with last call at midnight.
