Hot pink makeup is in for spring
Pink may conjure visions of Barbie dolls and Bazooka bubblegum, but spring’s new hues are all grown up — decidedly more chic than sweet.
Makeup artist Peter Philips is something of an authority on the color, having created products and runway looks that span both sides of the pink spectrum. Philips created pale, glossy pink lips and nails, paired with metallic eyes, for the spring 2013 Chanel fashion show, and fuchsia pouts to accent the grunge-influenced Dries Van Noten show.
“Pink, in whatever shade or intensity, is flattering for most women,” says Philips. “It’s a great color to bring out a girl’s beauty, without [making her seem] overly made up.”
“For Chanel, I kept the skin shiny and didn’t apply any blush,” Philips says. “At Dries Van Noten, the focus was on the lip. I approached the lip as an accessory, a beautiful dash of color on a natural face. To enhance this effect, I [again] applied no blush.”
If a look-at-me magenta lip with no blush appears stark when translated from catwalk to sidewalk, Philips has some advice.
“If you feel that an isolated color is too much, you can soften the look by applying a subtle touch of color to your cheeks,” he says. “You can even use the lipstick as a blusher, by applying a sheer layer on the cheeks with your fingers.”
Punchy or pale, powerful or pretty, the new shades of pink, Philips says, are “perfect for expressing a positive spring mood.”
