Valerie, G&B coffee opening at Grand Central Market; Hinoki & the Bird opens for lunch
As one of the many new vendors participating in Grand Central Market’s current revamp, Valerie Confections will open Valerie, a coffee shop/lunch counter hybrid version of the L.A. bakery Friday. The shop is located at the stall formerly occupied by MF Gourmet. Cofounders Valerie Gordon and Stan Weightman Jr. will serve classic cakes plus a Brown Derby grapefruit cake, Blum’s coffee crunch cake and Scandia’s apple cake, a selection of pastries and $2 cups of coffee. G&B Coffee, also a new member of the Grand Central Market’s lineup, will open Friday. The new coffee stall by Klye Glanville and Charles Babinski, formerly of Intelligentsia, features a 30-foot bar and will serve espresso drinks and filtered coffee. There will also be coffee shakes on the menu made with McConnell’s ice cream and espresso or espresso and chocolate ganache. The filtered coffee will be made with Japanese Kalita Wave drippers and the beans will come from a variety of distributors including Heart Roasters in Portland, Ore., Ritual in San Francisco and the Chicago-based Intelligentsia. 317 Broadway St., No. C19, Los Angeles, www.gandbcoffee.com.
Hinoki & the Bird, the Century City restaurant by chef/founder David Myers and chef Kuniko Yagi debuted a lunch menu Tuesday. The menu includes a selection of new salads, sandwiches and entrees including a green papaya salad with baby carrots and peanuts, crispy chicken sandwich with spicy mustard and pickles and filet mignon sandwich with roasted tomatoes and pickles and a monkfish with yellow curry noodles, eggplant and herbs.
