Pantone announced “dazzling blue” as a *key color for 2014, fashion designers showed many hues of blue on the spring 2014 runways, and we’re already seeing the colors of water and sky on the red carpet.

I love the blue color story Ahna O’Reilly has been telling on the red carpet lately. On Oct. 21 at the Elle Women in Hollywood celebration, the “CBGB” actress wore a strapless Spring 2013 Monique Lhuillier dress in an ocean print.

Three nights later, at the Who What Wear and Cadillac 50 Most Fashionable Women of 2013 event, she followed up with a cobalt blue baroque print V-neck cocktail dress from the resort 2014 collection by Indian American designer Bibhu Mohapatra.

In keeping with the baroque theme, actress Camilla Belle wore an embroidered porcelain blue Oscar de la Renta dress to the opening of “A Quest for Beauty: The Art of Van Cleef & Arpels” at the Bowers Museum on Oct. 26. Reminiscent of a Faberge egg, the gilded embroidery was as ornate as the jewels inside the museum cases.

Joseph Altuzarra worked several colors of blue into patchworked prints in his Spring 2014 collection, which was inspired by traditional Japanese workwear, or boro clothing. Lily Collins wore a button-down shirt in the boro print, along with a white silk draped pencil skirt, to the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund event Oct. 23.

Blue can have a calming, cooling effect, as seen in the Chloe Spring 2014 collection, which was all about dressing for extreme heat. January Jones wore a “Tuareg blue” macrame lace dress from the collection to the Chloe Fashion Show & Dinner hosted by designer Clare Waight Keller on Oct. 29. And Zoe Saldana looked cool as a cucumber in one of the collection’s stunning knotted, micropleat dresses in a similar shade.

[UPDATED 11/01/2013 at 2:16 p.m.: An earlier version of this post incorrectly named “brilliant blue” as Pantone’s 2014 color of the year. Although “brilliant blue” was included in Pantone’s Fashion Color Report for spring 2014, the 2014 color of the year will not be announced until December.]
