Red carpet review: Men not in black
Bold menswear colors are not just for quirky Brits and funny guys anymore.
For years the basic uniform for men, on and off the red carpet, has been black or gray. And few strayed from it.
But this season men are wearing more color than ever.
One of my favorite looks in recent weeks is the deep emerald green Versace two-button suit with notch lapels that Alan Ritchson wore to the Los Angeles premiere of “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” on Nov. 18. The cut of the suit is a bit retro, and narrow, which is required when trying to pull off such a bold hue.
I also liked the Dior Homme vivid blue wool micro check two-button suit Liam Hemsworth wore to a “Catching Fire” screening on Nov. 20 in New York. The color matches his eyes perfectly, and the white cotton shirt and black silk tie let the deep blue of the suit speak for itself.
And a Nov. 7 event for Italian menswear giant Ermenegildo Zegna in Los Angeles was a full blown celebration of color. Head of design Stefano Pilati made a point of saying that Zegna, known for 103 years for understated gray suits, was embracing color in its new Zegna Couture runway collection.
When getting dressed for the event, guests didn’t disappoint. Gerard Butler opted for a blue Z Zegna suit, Z Zegna shirt and tie, and Joe Jonas wore a maroon Z Zegna suit with a pink shirt.
