Undercover’s global mash-up
Jun Takahashi’s runway show for his cult Japanese label Undercover on Wednesday was the fashion moment we’d been waiting for at Paris Fashion Week.
The collection was a global mash-up of imperialist status symbols -- royal-looking capes, sashes, braided “hair” crowns, tartans, Delftware blue, pastoral toiles and more.
It was also a mash-up of tailoring and free-form drape. Coats and blazers were interlaced with colorful sashes, and vibrant toile and floral fabrics wrapped the body and head like traditional African robes.
All together, the collection hinted at a deeper message about the power of clothing and textiles to define and unite us. When it comes to fashion, there is no superpower, just a world of style tribes.
