New York Fashion Week spring 2014: Todd Snyder review

NEW YORK – Todd Snyder presented his spring 2014 “Blue Coast” menswear collection at the Lincoln Center tents here on Friday, the second day of Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week.

The inspiration: The “seductive rebel charm” of Alain Delon’s Tom Ripley in the 1960 French film “Purple Noon” (a.k.a. “Plein Soleil “ -- adapted from the same book, by the way, as the 1999 Matt Damon flick “The Talented Mr. Ripley.”)

The look: A color palette of eye-catching sea blues, plum purples and grays that evoked the Mediterranean, crisp nautical-stripe T-shirts and shorts, short-sleeve chambray button-downs, suits in gray hemp linen, a grab bag of blue plaids, a couple of cardigans and light outerwear pieces with standouts that included a maroon suede varsity jacket and a royal blue trench topcoat.

The scene: Snyder’s presentation marked our first Fashion Week encounter with a Google Glass wearer who strutted past the tableaux of models tapping his temples and talking to himself. It was also the first time we heard someone -- in this instance a Fashion Week photographer -- use a certain glass-prefixed anatomy-referencing epithet to refer to said strutter.

And we’re betting it won’t be the last.

The verdict: A blast of color and cool that feels as effortless as the Mediterranean breeze – and just as enticing.
