New York Fashion Week spring 2014: Duckie Brown review
NEW YORK — Daniel Silver and Steven Cox showed their spring and summer 2014 Duckie Brown menswear collection here on Friday during New York Fashion Week.
The inspiration: The Duckie duo was reportedly inspired by “fruit cart vendors in London and the romance of French lace” but the soundtrack -- Leikeli47’s “Miss America” with the hook “I dress like a boy, talk like a girl” -- felt like a closer match to a menswear collection that felt a bit more gender-bending than usual.
The look: Grounded in a palette navy blue, white and khaki, the collection included aprons layered over trousers, skirts, blousy, knee-length halter-top shirts and halter sweat shirts. In addition to playing with proportion, the collection was a contrast in textures thanks to lace layered over zip-front jackets and hoodies and paired with jute aprons (which appeared to be crafted from repurposed coffee sacks) and linen or jute trousers. Additionally, there were some navy blue and white striped pieces including an overcoat with variable-width horizontal stripes that called to mind the ubiquitous UPC barcode.
The verdict: A couple of peachy pieces -- but nothing to go bananas over.
