New York Fashion Week spring 2014: Band of Outsiders review
NEW YORK -- A little slice of L.A. came to New York Fashion Week on Sunday night when Band of Outsiders’ creative director Scott Sternberg showed his women’s collection at a Chelsea art space.
In the front row, stylist Brad Goreski, practically unrecognizable in a camo-print suit and trim beard, was catching up with actress Rashida Jones, who stars with her sister Kidada Jones in the fall 2013 Band of Outsiders campaign.
And the set piece on the runway was a view of the Hollywood sign from behind, and the lights of Los Angeles County glittering below.
The inspiration: Robert Altman’s 1973 neo-noir film, “The Long Goodbye,” specifically the “sporty, fresh, bohemian” look of heroine Eileen Wade (played by Nina Van Pallandt), the designer said backstage.
The look: Après-hike chic.
Key pieces: Slouchy athletic pants worn with a long-line sleeveless blazer; royal blue nylon poncho and parachute skirt, scarf-print top with pink Color Field-like squares; leather dolphin shorts; fringy green knit halter dress; breezy ivory and wildflower-printed nylon trench coat; white, washed silk crepe T-shirt maxi-dress, and crunchy granola, nylon cord sandals worn with socks.
The verdict: A delight. Sternberg touched on the ‘90s-era urban sport vibe that’s in the air this season, but mixed in enough other references to keep things from feeling derivative. The result was a versatile range of casual-cool pieces with an L.A. state of mind.
