Jennifer Meyer and friends celebrate Barneys New York capsule clothing collection
Jewelry designer Jennifer Meyer knows how to draw an A-list Hollywood crowd all right.
Dakota Johnson, Katy Perry, newly minted power couple Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton, Jennifer Aniston and Courtney Cox, and many others gathered Wednesday night in the backyard of the Brentwood home Meyer shares with hubby Tobey Maguire to celebrate her new collaboration with Barneys New York.
Launching today, the Jennifer Meyer XO Barneys New York collection marks her first foray into clothing.
“It’s literally the pieces I didn’t have in my closet,” said Meyer. “It’s the perfect striped T-shirt with sleeves just short enough to show a bracelet. A wrap dress because DVF is my mentor, and a wrap dress helps cover up all the areas I like covered. There’s a sweet white apron dress, a pink coat, the perfect black pant. And I wear cardigans all the time so we did two.”
Meyer started her jewelry business a decade ago with a single leaf pendant (subsequently worn by Aniston in the 2006 film “The Break Up”). Best-sellers include wishbone pendants, initial pendants, “mommy” pendants, and customized bar pendants in polished gold, pave diamonds and colored gem stones. Prices range from $175 to $100,000 and the pieces are made in Los Angeles.
Meyer built her brand on the idea that jewelry should be delicate, layered and personal enough to wear every day. And her Hollywood fans have embraced it, giving it as gifts to sisters, friends and mommys-to-be.
For Barneys, she brought the same philosophy of casual, versatile luxury to clothing.
At the event, guests were greeted at the front door by flower-festooned mannequins showcasing pieces from the collection, which is priced from $150 to $1025, including a navy suede midi skirt with decorative buttons ($595), a Breton striped “Je T’aime” T-shirt ($75); fuzzy gray cashmere blend cardigan ($495) and the delicate print silk crepe de chine wrap dress ($595) that Meyer herself was wearing.
Partygoers from the fashion and film worlds, including Sam Taylor Johnson and designers Andrea Lieberman, Emily Current and Merritt Elliott, sipped gimlets out of vintage glasses, and dined on mini lobster rolls and fried acorn squash rings by super-chefs Jon Shook and Vinny Dotolo.
Meyer’s kids, Ruby and Otis, ran circles around the tables and heat lamps, occasionally being corralled by “Grandpa,” a.k.a. Hollywood heavyweight and vice-chairman of NBC Universal, Ron Meyer.
The designer said she wanted to have the event at her home as a thank-you to friends for supporting her for the past 10 years. And she hopes the clothing collection, available at Barneys stores and online, is the beginning of something more permanent.
“I had a good time doing it but I really had the support of Barneys, so maybe I can convince them to keep on supporting my need,” she laughed. “I love clothes, I love fashion. It’s a dream come true.”
