Fashion-wise the menfolk were all over the map at the 72nd Golden Globes on Sunday night, with sartorial standouts -- good and bad -- pulling most of the focus. But there was one noticeable, if subtle, trend: a bumper crop of dark blue hues that elevated the tuxedo look to just a notch above normal.

Among the boys busting out the blue were nominee Liev Schreiber in a navy blue, notch collar mohair Prada tuxedo with black silk faille lapels, and Common (who, along with John Legend won in the original song category) also kitted out in a blue Prada tuxedo with a tone-on-tone blue tuxedo shirt and blue satin bow tie.

Winner Matt Bomer, who snared a supporting actor award for “The Normal Heart,” arrived in a Ralph Lauren Black Label navy blue shawl collar tuxedo (though, in our opinion, the bow tie seemed a bit tiny for the actor and put the whole look out of whack) and Jeffrey Tambor, who took home a lead actor trophy for his “Transparent” turn, turned out in a navy blue shawl collar tuxedo and navy blue tie by Ermenegildo Zegna.

One of the night’s double nominees, Mark Ruffalo, donned a single-button, peak-lapel Dior Homme tuxedo in a slightly lighter shade described as “marine blue” (paired with a navy blue bow tie for contrast) and perennial fashion plate Robert Downey Jr. was in a navy blue Valentino tuxedo with black contrast lapels accented with a blue paisley pocket square and a pair of blue Paul Smith Shawbury sunglass frames with custom purple lenses.

But the blue man group didn’t necessarily have a lock on the evening’s standout style, some of the most eye-catching looks came from a dapper deck of wild cards including Jared Leto in an off-white tuxedo with black satin peak lapels and piping paired with an off-white satin bow tie from Lanvin’s spring 2015 pre-collection, lead actor winner Eddie Redmayne (“The Theory of Everything”) in a black velvet peak-lapel, two-button Gucci evening jacket, and George Clooney who melted hearts and scored points with the backstage revelation that he was sporting the very same (Giorgio Armani) tuxedo he’d worn for his September wedding to Amal Alamuddin. (It’s worth noting that Clooney has a long track record of recycling his red-carpet wardrobe -- and when one looks as classically dashing as he always does, who’s to argue?)

One of the evening’s hands-down misses was nominee Alan Cumming who turned up in a tone-on-tone buff-colored tuxedo from the spring 2015 Calvin Klein Collection that evoked comparisons to a discarded adhesive bandage. But, to be fair, we give him serious props for accessorizing with the pair of grommet-festooned high-top sneakers he wore.
