For fall 2014, Burberry menswear takes a ‘painterly journey’
Since we’re not actually across the pond to see the menswear being shown as part of the London Collections: Men’s we won’t be reviewing them. We will, however, be sharing images (and any details we can gather) if and when something strikes our fancy.
Consider our fancy struck with the Burberry Prorsum fall and winter 2014 menswear collection shown Wednesday -- in particular the range of boldly patterned wool/cashmere equestrian-inspired blanket scarves that look hefty enough to insulate against the polar vortex.
According to the post-show notes sent our way, the collection -- titled “A Painterly Journey” -- took inspiration from artists like Ben Nicholson, Christopher Wood, Lucian Freud and Duncan Grant.
In addition to the equestrian-inspired blanket scarves (some bearing leaf designs inspired by English wallpaper patterns, others riffing on the label’s trademark check) a couple of the other pieces that caught our attention included a cashmere sweater with an intarsia design of Saint Paul’s Cathedral on the front (above right) and a red-and-white lighweight jacket depicting London landmarks -- paired on the runway with a red, blue and white silk scarf featuring a map of London inspired by vintage drawings.
Burberry is continuing the “buy from the runway” program it launched in 2012, which means some ready-to-wear and accessories from the runway collection can be ordered online (now through Jan. 22) for delivery in nine weeks. A bit of a wait perhaps, but still well ahead of the normal fall-winter collection delivery schedule.
Early as it is, it’s still cold comfort -- quite literally -- if you’re reading this from somewhere in the midst of the polar vortex.
