Henson had her pick of designers for the Emmys, but she gave a boost to designer Alexander Wang, by wearing his custom black lace bustier gown with chain straps. The front cutout added just the right touch of sensuality.

Created by her former stylist-turned-designer Brandon Maxwell, the understated look was a good bet for the Emmys, since it was really a night for TV stars to shine.

Baylen / Los Angeles Times)Kerry Washington, usually in Prada on the red carpet, also supported the home team, stepping out in a spangled, embroidered lace and sequin gown with a scalloped hem, hot off the Marc Jacobs runway, as in on Thursday, when he showed his edgy Americana collection during New York Fashion Week.

(Liz O. Baylen / Los Angeles Times)Uzo Aduba’a pink silk faille criss-cross gown was custom-designed by up-and-comer Jonathan Cohen and inspired by a Mark Rothko painting.
(Liz O. Baylen / Los Angeles Times)Also in the bold color category, Sarah Hyland looked better than ever in a deep plum off-shoulder Zac Posen gown.

(Jay L. Clendenin / Los Angeles Times)Tituss Burgess cast a vote for populist fashion by choosing a green tuxedo from New York-based men’s fashion disruptor Bonobos.
(Jay L. Clendenin / Los Angeles Times)Taylor Schilling was the coolest canary on the carpet in a Stella McCartney parachute silk gown.
(Jordan Strauss/Invision/AP)Tatiana Maslany perfected the masculine-meets-feminine look in this ivory Bouchar Jarrar tuxedo.
(Danny Moloshok/Invision for the Television Academy/AP Images)Sarah Paulson’s blue-black off-shoulder Prabal Gurung gown was sparkling simplicity.
(Mark Ralston / AFP/Getty Images)The mixed front-and-back embroideries on Naomi Watts’ Dior gown — and the refreshing short length — made this a winner. Watts is seen here with Liev Schreiber.
(Mark Ralston / AFP/Getty Images)Kiernan Shipka rocked Raf Simons’ Dior cutting-edge, cutoff ball gown perfectly, like so many other celebs have.
(Jay L. Clendenin / Los Angeles Times)David Oyelowo wears Dolce & Gabbana men’s wear like no other, and the texture of this tuxedo added extra oomph.
(Liz O. Baylen / Los Angeles Times)Aubrey Plaza’s red crystal-dusted Alexandre Vauthier gown was effortless Hollywood glam.
(Alberto E. Rodriguez/Getty Images for TNT LA)Only Alan Cumming could get away with wearing Crocs on the red carpet. A Vivienne Westwood three-piece suit with really baggy trousers completed the so-zany-it-was-good look.
(Paul Buck / EPA)Heidi Klum chose the color of the night, canary yellow, but this Atelier Versace gown with cascading lace and crystals was more big Big Bird than graceful swan.
(Danny Moloshok / Invision for the Television Acad)Maggie Gyllenhaal’s Oscar de la Renta ball gown didn’t live up to her reputation for indie style.
(Liz O. Baylen / Los Angeles Times)Amy Schumer’s Zac Posen gown was so simple it was forgettable.
(Jordan Strauss / Invision/Associated Press)Claire Danes’ thin frame was overwhelmed by the chunky shoulder chains on this Prada sequin gown.
(Frazer Harrison / Getty Images)The stiff oval bib on Joanna Newsom’s Delpozo gown was as much of a distraction as the extra skirt.
(Liz O. Baylen / Los Angeles Times)January Jones chose the trend that just won’t end, the jumpsuit. And this emerald green Ulyana Sergeenko number wasn’t up to her typically envelope-pushing fashion standards.
(Liz O. Baylen / Los Angeles Times)In petal pink and black with a draped bodice, this J. Mendel gown worn by Joanne Froggatt put a new spin on the classic Grecian goddess look.
(Mark Ralston / AFP/Getty Images)Julianne Hough’s Marchesa gown, seen here with Derek Hough, left, is garter straps gone wild. Or maybe it’s a rejected costume from Madonna’s “Rebel Heart” tour?
