10 fashionable things to see, do and shop for in 2014
As we all try to get back into the swing of work after the holidays, here are 10 stylish things on my to-do list for the next few months.
1) Celebrate the dress that started it all.
2014 marks the 40th anniversary of Diane von Furstenberg’s iconic wrap dress, which will be celebrated with “Journey of a Dress” on Jan. 11 to April 1 at the Wilshire May Co. building in Los Angeles, a retrospective exhibition of vintage and contemporary wrap designs — from the first sample to what has become a symbol of power and freedom for generations of women.
2) Pick up some cold-weather style inspiration.
From Ralph Lauren’s Team USA parade uniforms, to Burton’s patchwork snowboarding team parkas, the Winter Olympics in Sochi on Feb. 7 to 23, are shaping up to be a smorgasbord of cold-weather chic.
3) Stay and play someplace new in L.A.
L.A.’s center of cool continues to shift east with the opening of The Line Hotel in Koreatown (a collaboration between the Sydell Group, chef Roy Choi, designer Sean Knibb and nightclub impresarios the Houston Brothers) and the Ace Hotel in the historic 1927 United Artists building downtown.
4) Fall in love with Wes Anderson all over again.
Judging from the trailer, Wes Anderson’s new film “The Grand Budapest Hotel” (due out March 7) about a concierge at a European hotel between the wars and the lobby boy who becomes his best friend, should be a color-saturated feast of quirkiness for the eyes.
5) Shop the best of fashion’s avant garde in one place.
Comme des Garcons designer Rei Kawakubo has brought her avant-garde emporium Dover Street Market to New York’s Murray Hill neighborhood, with offerings from Simone Rocha, Junya Watanabe, Thom Browne, Sacai, Repossi and more.
6) Explore what makes a designer tick.
“Dries Van Noten Inspirations,” March 1 to Aug. 31 at the Museum Les Arts Decoratifs in Paris, will explore the Belgian fashion designer’s diverse inspirations, from folkloric textiles to the work of artists such as Francis Bacon and Elizabeth Peyton. In addition to pieces from Van Noten’s men’s and women’s collections, the exhibition will include musical and film clips and artworks that have informed his creative process over the years.
7) Look at Louis Vuitton in a new way.
Taking over for Marc Jacobs, Nicolas Ghesquiere will show his first runway collection for Louis Vuitton in March.
8) Admire two icy beauties at once.
Nicole Kidman portrays fashion plate Grace Kelly in “Grace of Monaco,” due out March 14.
9) See Dorothy’s pinafore.
Costume historian Deborah Nadoolman Landis bring her blockbuster London exhibition “Hollywood Costume” stateside to the Phoenix Art Museum March 26 to July 6, highlighting how costume creates character with examples from 100 years of moviemaking, including “The Wizard of Oz.”
10) Visit St. Barths for a song.
When designer Peter Som’s colorful cheap chic collection for Kohl’s, inspired by the island paradise, hits stores this spring.
