Trevor Noah wonders why Republicans aren’t ‘pro-life’ when it comes to guns

Trevor Noah thinks politicians opposed to abortion rights should apply the same zeal to preventing gun violence.

On Monday’s “The Daily Show,” the newly minted host gave credit to conservative lawmakers who in recent years have successfully restricted access to abortion using methods such as expanding waiting periods and requiring doctors to have admitting privileges at hospitals.

“You might not be a fan of pro-lifers, but you’ve got to admit they are damn good at what they do,” Noah said, “The same way that the Knicks have to give props to Lebron James, or the way that dolphins have to give props to tuna nets.”

The inroads made by the antiabortion movement had been “truly amazing,” said the comedian, who suggested that a similar level of commitment could help when it comes to the American problem of gun violence.

“Imagine if we could bring some of that pro-life passion into being well, more pro-life.”

And that he did: Through a little editing magic, Noah turned antiabortion politicians such as Gov. Rick Perry and Rep. Joe Barton into advocates for measures including closing the gun-show loophole, banning the sale of high-capacity magazines and allowing government health agencies to research gun violence.

But without the help of voiceover, Noah concluded that such a conversion is not likely at the moment. Republican politicians are “more like comic book collectors,” he said. “Human life only holds value until you take it out of the package, and then it’s worth nothing.”
